Darbepoetin Alfa Market Overview

Darbepoetin alfa (INN) is a modified version of erythropoietin that has 2 additional sites for the addition of N-linked carbohydrates as a consequence of 5 amino acid modifications (N30, T32, V87, N88, and T90). Compared to epoetin alpha and epoetin beta, it has a 3-fold longer serum half-life. It is used to treat anemia, which is frequently linked to chronic renal failure and cancer treatment. It promotes erythropoiesis (increases red blood cell numbers) by the same mechanism as rHuEpo (binding and activating the Epo receptor). Epogen, Procrit, Aranesp, and other drugs fall within the category of Darbepoetin Alfa, and its percentage in 2017 was almost 45%. The majority of Darbepoetin Alfa is used for patients with chronic kidney disease, and in 2017 that percentage was 62%.
